There are about seventeen species in two genera, although three species of mockingbird in the Galápagos Islands were previously divided into a third genus, Nesomimus. The mockingbirds tend not to appear to sort a monophyletic lineage, as Mimus and Melanotis are not one another's closest relations; as a substitute, Melanotis seems being more carefu
